I have a weaning T. African that has food available in between hand feedings. This morning and this afternoon I caught her eating poop. She hasn’t done it before.

Have an African Grey parrot! Where would be a good place to donate?
Category: African Grey Forum
Question by blondee: Have an African Grey parrot! Where would be a good place to donate?
We have had our African Gray parrot for many, many years now and we do love him dearly…..but ever since my folks got a new dog in the family, I feel the bird is being somewhat neglected as far as love and attention goes. We live in Nevada and I was wondering about a bird sanctuary that I could donate the bird to where he is able to fly and be happy….not that he is miserable by any means, but I feel he COULD be happier. Any suggestions?

Oh nice. Get a new dog, kick out the old bird. When you get a new cat, are you going to ditch the dog, too?
Try thinking about the actual animal for a second. Don’t you think that maybe the bird might be traumatized by being torn away from its family? Do you know how many parrots in rescues have abandonment and trust issues because they’ve moved from family to family? Do you even realize how intelligent parrots are, and how much it would mess up a bird for you to do this? Instead of taking the lazy route and just getting rid of the animal you’re bored of, why not try actually giving the bird the attention it deserves?
It’s absolutely ridiculous that you would kick out the bird for a new dog. If anything, it’s the new dog who should go, especally since he’s more likely to be able to readjust to a new family since he hasn’t been around as long.

I just got a Blue Mountain Lorikeet and my Blue Fronted Amazon isn’t too happy. I can let them out of their cages at the same time because they usually play on top of their cages and don’t get off. I do not leave them unsupervised while they are both out. What I have been doing is holding the Lorikeet closer and closer to the cage, and when my Amazon starts to peck at her, then I quickly back off. I also make sure I am still paying attention to my Amazon. My Amazon gets along with my Parakeets, so I think in time, she will get along with my Lorikeet. I have noticed when I am playing with my Lorikeet may Amazon seems to be moving closer and closer to us, she wants to check her out but is unsure. I don’t let either one of them climb on the others cage. Their is a size difference in your two birds, so just be cautious. I think if you give them time they will like each other, although they may not.

If it’s your first bird, why don’t you start with something less demanding? I strongly suggest a cockatiel or a budgie as a first bird, since they will help you get accustomed to what owning a bird is going to be like.

Question by Bradley: what would be the price range for an african grey parrot at the parrot Society show in october?
im looking to buy baby either hand reared or young parent reared African grey parrot for a house pet i already breed budgies and cockatiels so i have a table there so im just wonder how much money should i take to get an african grey.

Answer by Betta Lover
African Greys typically go for around 1,000-1,500 at a young age. The good thing is, at shows the birds tend to be less money then what they would normally for. As the breeders are typically offering a lower price for the show.
I would also suggest looking at hand reared, instead of parent raised. You’ve worked with smaller birds, and as you know they can be tamed even after they have been parent raised at a young age quite easily. With larger birds, it’s more difficult (especially since their bites are so much worse) and often times people don’t realize how hard it is to tame a parent raised large parrot.
Hope you get your African Grey :)!

can i put a african grey in the same cage with a umbrella cockatoo? Would they make good companions?
Category: African Grey Forum
Question by heartbreak 8-12-06: can i put a african grey in the same cage with a umbrella cockatoo? Would they make good companions?
I have the opportunity to take in a african grey complete with cage as the owner is moving and cannot take – but I already have an umbrella cockatoo – can the two breeds be placed together? Or would it be best to keep them in separate cages?
Best answer:
Answer by Cliffieduckie
Keep them separate. They don’t know each other, and bigger birds tend to be VERY territorial. They’ll also bond to you more if they’re separate. Put the cages next to each other so that the birds wont get lonely, and you should have two happy birds!
Good luck!

Question by Charlotte L: Out of 3 parrots the Goffin Cockatoo,Blue Fronted Amazon and African Grey which one would you advise?
Ok here is this question. I have narrowed this disesion down to 3 parrots and am tring to decide on which one to purchase. Eather the Blue fronted amazon, African Grey(I actually think it is a congo grey it has the red tail feathers), or Goffin Cockatoo. I want affectionate but comicall but also i have 13 cockatiels i am rasing and one african ringneck dove.
Best answer:
Answer by me
well, the cockatoos need a TON of attention and will get very stressed out if you dont give it to them all the time, and because you have so many other birds to take care of…..
greys are super super smart but i think they can be tempermental, it varies from bird to bird, but the chances are higher in that you may get a tempermental bird if you go with the grey. so i guess i would recommend the amazon!
