Answer by ms bell
Without his wings being clipped, your african gray parrot can easily fly away and become lost. It would be very difficult to impossible to catch him if he flies off. That is why it’s a good idea to have your parrot’s wings clipped. In addition, your parrot can easily become injured or killed by a predator or by flying into something. I highly recommend keeping you parrots wings clipped, especially if you take it outside.

How do I stop my African Grey Congo from biting?

Question by ask me: How do I stop my African Grey Congo from biting?
In the store my grey was so tame. He spepped up on command and he liked to be srached on the neck. As soon as we got him home to his new cage…he wont step up and he bites. please help.

Best answer:

Answer by Karila Dawnblade
Your best bet is to leave him be for a little while; see, he’s in a completely new place and is likely terrified. Let him rest, but still spend time around him in his cage. He *should* calm down once he’s more familiar with his surroundings.

African Greys are the smartest birds in the world. They’re excellent talkers, and will even need puzzle-oriented toys to prevent them from getting bored. They can talk after roughly 1 year of age.

What do people out there have to suggest on care for African Grey Parrots?

Question by shelley: What do people out there have to suggest on care for African Grey Parrots?
I brought home a Congo African Grey last month; he/she is now about 4 1/2 months old and seems to be doing very well. Is on a primarily pelleted diet (mix of Harrison’s and Zupreem) and absolutely loves fresh veggies and other foods such as scrambled egg. I have a full spectrum light on for part of the day and the bird has also had a vet visit (I work at an avian vet) and will be going back next week for some blood testing (We tried to be conservative first visit as to not stress him/her out) I have owned birds before and know the essentials (large cage, plenty of toys, etc) but basically I am looking for tips from people out there that have experience with these birds and have learned things through trial and error. Things are going very well so far but I want my bird to be as healthy mentally and physically as possible and am open to suggestions on the behavior of Greys and what sort of little things you’ve learned to do to make your pet happy. Thanks in advance!!

Answer by cdsgeo2
Males and Females are abit different as they are in all avian species.
Males are larger and have flatter heads, females have more rounded heads..and abit smaller. I know this wasn’t your question, but as your baby grows is something to notice..just because-:)

Male Grey’s make a natural jungle type sound. Some object to the sound,

Greys can be one person birds if allowed to be, so is important to socialize them when young. Expose them to a variety of toys, people, carriers, car trips, the out door’s, sights and sounds Etc.

Not all talk as is commonly thought, but do talk to your Grey alot and often even though Greys don’t talk until one year normally they do compute words/sounds in their minds before saying the word or words.
Becareful what you say around them..my first Grey’s first words nearly scared me to death. I was in the house alone and “Someone” said Oh Shit. I went from room to room looking for the stranger in my house, only to discover it was my TAG! true story.
She said over 2,000 words as an adult.

I now have CAG who is adorable and fun and funny, but she doesn’t say more than 50 diff. words. But has a sense of humor and use’s it to keep us laughing alot!

Handle the new Grey alot, teach her the Step Up Commands and other wanted behavior’s, never let anyone tease her/him and continue feeding the healthy avian diet that you are.

Haveing a bird stand for him/her and hanging swing or Orbit to play on and hang out also is a good thing for the bird and for you.
It’s too easy to spoil them when they are young, but for their sakes do try to ensure they have time alone to entertain themselves.

By the way, Greys love to be bossy. My CAG gives order’s to the rest of my flock all day long, it’s sooo funny.
Cockatoo’s yell, Emmy says, NO! Stop That. Be Quite. and when all else fails, she call’s my husband -Carl! LOL

CONGRATS! You will have many years of pleasure and fun with your new bird.

Can a Sun Conure and an African Grey live together?

Question by Whitney S: Can a Sun Conure and an African Grey live together?
My fiance and I both agreed that a bird would be a good pet. We have both had them in the past and enjoyed our experiences with them. The problem is I want an African Grey and he wants a Sun Conure. I was thinking maybe both (money isn’t of concern, thankfully) but I was wondering if they could cage together or if two separate cages would be best.

Best answer:

Answer by Budgie Momma
Well two separate cages next to each other would be best but if you get a really tough out going SC then the grey might be OK with it and they’ll become very good friends. I don’t really suggest co-housing different species but there are the times when it’s perfectly fine like a cockatiel and a rosella go good together. Since money isn’t an object get two big cages and put them next to each other and let the birds fly together.

question regarding congo african grey, when do they reach full size?

Question by brian: question regarding congo african grey, when do they reach full size?
I have a 10 month old congo grey who weighs a little under 400 grams. Is this his/her full adult weight, or will he/she continue to fill out over the next few years?

Best answer:

Answer by mockingbird
ours was 420 when we got ours and now he is 500grams, but ours went from 430 to 480 in like 2 months when we decided to let his wings grow out. at first he got out of breath from flying 2 feet, now he flies effortlessly! i think ours got a spurt of muscle-growth from flying yours might not get.
they don’t get bigger tho, i looked up weight on-line and saw that 500+ is normal, but my dad always thinks our grey is too fat because he thinks they are not supposed to gain weight. he’s been steady around 500 so my dad isnt’ doing anythign stupid like trying to ration food or anything, he just keep promisitg to cut down on seeds but spoiling that bird with seeds anyway.

I read few articles in the net which talks about giving newspaper and other old books for grey parrots. Because they like destroying things. How to tame an african grey?

Question by birdys.stirling: How to tame an african grey?
Hi,
I have a congo african grey, he is 3 years old, he is fine in his cage and will let me stroke him feed him etc but once he is out of his cage he starts biting, sometimes he will fly to me and sometimes he will let me pick him up but only on rare occassions.

How can i get him tame when out of his cage, i’ve tried picking him up on a perch but he just fly’s around the room.

Thanks.

Answer by jewel_leeee
This is a great site for owners of African Greys. I would not believe eveything you read in the forums but most offer good advice. Biting is a common problem.
I hope this helps.

http://www.anafricangrey.ca/

I read the answers after mine. I would have an experienced person such as a vet help and teach you the first time. My son-in-law is a vet. You wouldn’t believe how many people cause bleeding and injury because they clipped up too far.
