AFRICAN GREY, NIKO, PLAYING PEEK-A-BOO

Here is our 4th Parrot: NIKO, the AFRICAN GREY. We adopted him in 2005 and don’t know much about him other than that he was probably stuck in a tiny cage with little or NO interaction or human touch at all and NEVER let out of his cage. When we first got him, he LUNGED at us viciously ready to take a chunk of flesh out of our bodies with his formidable big beak if we got any closer than a foot to his cage. It took him MONTHS to just dare venture out and climb on TOP of his cage. Since then, he has made GREAT progress and has stopped the lunging. The aggressive biting has subsided considerably as well! A couple of months ago, he started climbing off his cage and began exploring the floor around his cage. The latest and most gratifying development is that he seems to finally be looking for closer human contact: he now walks over to the TV tray by the couch, climbs up on it, and lets me ever so gently (and carefully!) touch his head. Maybe one day he will actually let me scratch it for real! His world is getting bigger at last!!! :) As usual, you can HEAR high-pitched loud-mouth Rainbow Lory Twillie in the background and SEE Umbrella Cockatoo Nana busily re-arranging the paper at the bottom of her cage. Go to PETFINDER(dot)com, select ‘Bird’ and type in your zip code…that should bring up some places that have parrots up for adoption…

also, make sure his wings were clipped properly if it was just done…sometimes the ends of the shaft irritate them and they chew the ends to soften them but it becoomes habit forming.

    good luck!

  8. wildlifeguardian on August 31st, 2010 9:32 pm

First of all, you should take him to your bird vet to rule out any physical problems that might irritate him and the only way he can tell you is by chewing on himself. Also look around and see if anything has changed in his environment — cage position, new curtains, a box that wasn’t there before, new furniture etc.
You have to be a really good detective to figure out what’s bothering our feathered friends…and something is bothering Durwin…

    This video is so cute!
I also have an African Grey Parrot. He’s adorable, his name is Durwin.

Lately he’s experiencing some issues though. He seems to pick at his feathers quite a lot. I fear it’s becoming an increasing issue. Any reason why he might be doing this?

  10. wildlifeguardian on August 31st, 2010 11:23 pm

Thank you! He’s been with us for 4 years now! He loves walking over the floor…slowly…

I had a bird like that, he’s a cockatiel named Tachi. When we got him from a bird breeder, it was at first for our other female cockatiel Tita. He was scared of us too and he hid in dark places. But when he noticed we had other birds as well he became curious and has been learning from them. He now asks us to scratch his head every once in a while. Just his head though.

I watched and watched and could not see Niko. Then I laughed so hard I cried. That was one of the funniest videos I have ever seen.
Like your other watcher, I too have four birds and have only seen one of mine ever do anything like this but under a laundry basket. Unlike Niko, she was so angry after that she had to give me a big bite to get even, before we made up. It’s obvious you take good care of your babies, providing out time and entertainment. You are to be commended.

  19. Amy4Birds on September 1st, 2010 4:19 am

Oh, bobblehead Niko, how I love you! I also have four parrots — three adopted, and one bought about 12 or so years ago when I was a stupid moron who didn’t understand that you should NEVER BUY A PARROT. Only adopt. Got it, folks?! ;-) My grey took forever to get over being left by her previous owner. Those birds are like elephants. They never forget!

  20. wildlifeguardian on September 1st, 2010 5:13 am

It’s a daily challenge and you learn something new every day as you observe their changing behavior! So we are constantly adjusting and re-adjusting. But when they finally start coming out of the shells they retreated into after all the abuse and/or neglect, it makes it all worthwhile!

  21. wildlifeguardian on September 1st, 2010 5:59 am

    Thanks! :>)

  22. jabbabird on September 1st, 2010 6:31 am

He is soooo adorable. That is just too cute!

  23. pattyinla on September 1st, 2010 7:07 am

You can really see he wants to get out and interact but seems unsure. One day he will just get out there and be a free and fearless bird! Bless you for your work with these beautiful creatures and your understanding of their needs.

  24. wildlifeguardian on September 1st, 2010 7:14 am

I guess he feels safer under that paper and, yes, he walks VERY slowly and carefully. He also burrows under the paper on the play table and is MOST happy to let me stroke his back but only as long as my hand is ON TOP of THE PAPER. Take the paper away and try to do it directly and you risk getting mauled… Poor guy — he wants to interact so badly but doesn’t know how! We are making progress though!!! :>)

  25. july7nyc on September 1st, 2010 7:40 am

that is the cutest thing i have ever seen- under the paper like that!?! what a beautiful bird. he looks so much like my charlie and they both have huge feet! lol! charlie creeps along like that on the floor too sometimes.
