Koko The African Grey
Koko proves that just because an African Grey is considered the best sound copying parrot, doesn’t mean they all have the desire to do so. She is over 30 years old and in her entire life has learned a grand total of five sounds. Compare that to some African Greys with a vocabulary of several hundred! How long does it take African Grey’s to learn a word or phrase?
Question by Me1984: How long does it take African Grey’s to learn a word or phrase?
My mom has an African Grey, and I was curious to know how long it takes them to pick up a word? The bird, Remington, says several different things. I am trying to teach it to say cell phone and sing along with one of my ring tones, but how long will it take for her to learn those words? What is the best approach to teaching an African Grey new words? Any information will be helpful.

Talk to it a lot. Repeat the same words over and over again until he/she gets used to it and eventually say it. It might take a long time though because it’s not like the pet is a baby. It might take longer for it to interpret it. Keep on talking to it and limit how much words you say. Good luck. :)

Adopting an african grey with a vacation home?
Question by Kay-tee: Adopting an african grey with a vacation home?
I am looking into adopting an African Grey, but I have a beach house right on the canal I would be taking my bird to about every weekend. My neighbor there has macaws and they love it there. I think with a little time the bird could get used to the schedule, any advice?
P.S. I have had birds before; this will not be my first bird adoption.

I don’t think it would be a problem. You’d probably want two cages, one at each location, plus a carrier for the trip. Some birds enjoy going places, some don’t. Even if yours doesn’t, though, once you’ve bonded I expect the bird would rather go with you than stay home alone.
