I heard you cant just give paper to african grey for them to play with some have chemicals so i was wondering are the calendars with magnet that we put on the fridge harmful to the african grey ?

Magnets are made with metals, and that is very dangerous to birds.
Most parrots, African greys included, have gizzards which are grinding organs. Hard things, if swallowed, like stones or pieces of metal will end up in the gizzard until they are ground up and able to be passed. This is the problem. If we were to swallow a piece of metal, it would just pass through our bodies, and come out when we move our bowels; however, a piece of metal will stay in a parrot a long time. As it’s being ground down, it’s releasing toxins which causes the bird to become ill. Without treatment, oftentimes, they die.
Paper, on the other hand is quite safe. Nowadays, paper is made so that it’s safe even for children, so it’s safe for parrots. There’s no problems with build up toxins, because if it’s swallowed, it goes right through the body.
I’ve been giving my birds newspaper, loose-leaf paper, and cardboard boxes to play with for years. I also have them regularly checked by my avian vet, and they’re all healthy. So, magnets, no, paper, yes!

Tui my 1 yr old watches me workout and has learnt to make “effort noises”. She has started to use them whenever she has to put in a little effort to get a scratch. She also swears when she hurts herself (don’t we all?)

African Grey?

Im planning on getting an African grey. Im considering using a tree as a habitat for him. Im not sure if this is appropriate though. I dont want my parrot to be in a cage, therefor im planning on purchasing a tree for him to perch on. Will this be too difficult, sanitation and feeding wise? Has anybody kept a parrot in a cage-less habitat?

It might be a better idea to give him his own “room”. They are incredible animals. Did you know they are the smartest birds in the world?
If he has his own room you will be able to keep a cage with the door open, so he can have toys, a perch and a place to eat and go poo. If the door is open, he still has freedom but won’t disturb your whole house.
We had an african gray in our environmental science classroom and our teacher kept his cage this way.
